Bitburger Open 2016

The Bitburger Open are an important trademark for sports in our region. For 29 years now, the tournament has been offering fascinating badminton sport at the highest international level. Top badminton players from various nations want to play the Gold Grand Prix tournament, among them world class players from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and Denmark. Around 270 athletes will be expected to show their best badminton again this year.

Spectators can look forward to six thrilling and exciting days of badminton. A very challenging sport that requires special fitness, reflexes and a smart serve. Badminton combines many fascinating facets such as speed, fitness, concentration and a really fast reaction time.

Many helping hands are needed to host such a great event. Around 120 volunteers from different European countries do their best in helping to create this unique atmosphere during the tournament. My special thanks and appreciation goes to the organizing team for their initiative and effort. A major sporting event like the Bitburger Open would not be possible without their extraordinary commitment. The final matches on the weekend will be broadcasted internationally - emphasizing the significance of the tournament.

My best wishes to the organizing team of the Bitburger Open 2016. I hope that many spectators will find their way to the venue Saarlandhalle from November 1 - 6, 2016, cheer for their favorite players and celebrate their victory together.

Bitburger Badminton Open 2016

01-06 November 2016

Dear Friends in Badminton

I am happy to note that the Bitburger Badminton Open is once again ready to warmly welcome players from all over the world.

As a Grand Prix Gold event and one with great tradition, this is an important event in our calendar and I take this opportunity to congratulate organisers and thank corporate partners for hosting an event that has been with us for nearly three decades.

As we all know, this event was first conceptualised in 1987 by a group of badminton enthusiasts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the club TV Bischmisheim. The 155 players who entered the tournament played in two school gyms. The Bitburger Open has evolved from such modest beginnings to become a popular event, with prize money of USD 120,000 and an ambience that is not seen elsewhere.

As with all our Grand Prix Gold tournaments, the Bitburger Badminton Open will enjoy worldwide telecast for at least two days on television, thanks to our partners IMG Media.

I am sure fans globally will be keen to see which players rise to the occasion this year. I am sure more great matches are in store and I wish all those competing in the event the very best of luck.

Poul-Erik Høyer
